The Kansas City School of the Arts will open in August, 2009. We will be offering a summer institute in June, 2009. Check back often for the most up-to-date information.
Kansas City School of the Arts is a public charter school within the Kansas City, Missouri School District. The KC School of the Arts houses grades 9 through 12 that is centered around a college preparatory curriculum that is embedded with the visual and performing arts. Students receive pre-professional training within 5 art disciplines at the high school level: Dance, Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, Theater and Theater Production, and Visual Arts. Students will be placed in one of the following three levels at enrollment: NOVICE, INTERMEDIATE, or ADVANCED. This will be determined through an audition process.
MISSION:
We believe that young people with an excitement for the arts should have the opportunity and encouragement to develop not only a variety of artistic skills, but also their creativity, self-expression, academic potential, intellectual insight, moral character, and sense of community responsibility.
We believe that sound artistic training, discipline, and exposure to the arts help build the qualities of character, judgment, insight, and sensitivity so important to good citizenship and to a rewarding life in any vocation the student might choose.
VISION:
It is the vision of the KC School of the Arts to provide pre-professional training to our students who are especially trained or interested in the arts. We see our role as the KC School of the Arts to be a cultural asset to the community-at-large where the community will gain artists, advocates of the arts, and valued contributors to society as these students make their career and life choices.
Statement of Non-Discrimination:
KC School of the Arts is a non-sectarian public school that is non-discriminatory in its admissions, programs, employment practices, governance and all other operations.
Admissions, participation in all school programs and opportunities, and the equitable treatment of all students shall not be limited to or influenced by the student’s race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, religion, disability, sexual orientation, disability, or socioeconomic status, in accordance with existing state and federal laws and regulations.
LOCATION
We are in the process of securing a location in the downtown loop. Be sure to check back often for progress notes. We are excited to at the possibility of being in very close proximity of the Avenue of the Arts (the Lyric, the Folly, the Kauffman Performing Arts Center, the Midland). We feel that this location will be a benefit to our students as well as an asset to the downtown that is experiencing a RENAISSANCE! We have been through the proposed site several times and are now working on bank financing with several local lenders who have already worked with charter schools in KCMO.
